DoNotPay was founded in 2015 by Joshua Browder in San Francisco, California, marketing itself as the "world's first robot lawyer" for consumers. The company has raised roughly $27.7 million in funding, including backing from Andreessen Horowitz. In September 2024 the U.S. Federal Trade Commission charged DoNotPay with falsely advertising that its AI performed like a licensed attorney; the FTC finalized a settlement in January 2025 requiring $193,000 in monetary relief, notice to affected past subscribers, and a prohibition on claiming the service performs like a real lawyer without adequate evidence.
